Successful CAS-H Conference 2005

Wolfgang Freysinger, member of the NCCR Co-Me Scientific Advisory Board and award winner at the CAS-H 2005 conference.

The 3rd International Conference on Computer Aided Surgery around the Head (CAS-H) 2005 took place in Berlin under the auspices of the Alfred Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach Foundation, the Charité Medical Centre, and the NCCR Co-Me. With this 3rd conference CAS-H has become an important milestone in the agendas of key players in Co-Me related research and development. Despite the strong competition of two comparable events that coincidentally took place in Berlin this autumn as well, CAS-H managed to attract more than 100 participants and twelve exhibitors.

As in the previous year, several members of the Co-Me network contributed considerably to the scientific program of the conference with 12 (out of 46) talks and four (out of 13) posters as well as with their strong presence in round table discussions and workshops.

Wolfgang Freysinger, member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the NCCR Co-Me and associated Professor at the Medical University Innsbruck (Clinic for ENT Surgery), was honoured with the CAS-H Award for Excellence in Computer Aided Surgery around the Head for his continuous contribution to the field, including his examination of the famous ice-man mummy “Oetzi”, and his numerous studies in the domain of computer assisted otorhinolaryngological surgery.

The Best Paper Award went to H. Lamecker, S. Zachow, H. Haberl and M. Stiller of the Zuse Institute and Charité Medical Centre Berlin for the presentation “Medical Applications for Statistical 3D Shape Models”. The Best Poster Award was given to C. Westendorff, J. Hoffmann and S. Reinert of University Hospital Tübingen for their work on “Computer Assisted Surgical Treatment of Choanal Atresia”.

The proceedings have been published in the series Fortschritt-Berichte Biotechnik/Biomedizin (Vol. 258) by the recognised VDI Verlag. The next CAS-H conference will be held in Innsbruck, Austria, on February 22-24, 2007.
